Lawmakers address voter fears over fees, social issues

Hanoi— Unreasonable school fees and other social issues were among the topics of petitions submitted to the Government and authorised agencies in the past year, members of the National Assembly Standing Committee heard yesterday.

The committee spent the morning reviewing a report on settlement of voter petitions to the 8th and 9th session of the 12th National Assembly.

Hanoi- Many real estate properties in the north have been offered for sale despite predictions that the market would stay cool until early next year.

Since September, villas have been offered in Hoa Binh Province, Dong Chanh 3 resort, Suoi Son urban area and Ba Vi District.

Le Xuan Truong, director of BDS Real Estate, said many investors decided to sell because they needed capital for other projects.

However, Truong said most investors must provide quality homes and offer them at reduced prices if they wanted to sell.

Personal income tax needs flexible adjustment

The law on personal income tax adopted in September, 2007 is no longer suitable in the current context, especially when the cost of living is rising rapidly.

According to the law, which took effect in January, 2009, the reduction level for taxpayers is VND4 million, and that for their dependants is VND1.6 million each. The lowest rate is 5 percent.

Challenges and impacts of unfair trade practices in ASEAN

This is the major theme of a conference held in Hanoi on March 11 by the Consumer Unity and Trust Society (CUTS) Hanoi Resource Centre in collaboration with the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

With the support of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, the conference aimed to launch a two-year project entitled “Study on Unfair Trade Practices in select ASEAN countries”, from 2011-2013.
